Based on Havel’s The Memorandum, our interpretation of this play took a critical look at the fake hipster lifestyle so prevalent in the Bay Area at the time. I rejoined my long-time Chapman collaborators Erik, Dave, Kirk, Andrew and Ben for this production. We formed an artistic collective called The Consortium, and rehearsed in a large live / work warehouse South of Market. Looking back, I remember feeling embarrassed by the play RENT, because it seemed to capture our lives so perfectly. The Memo had a profound impact on so many of us, greatly influencing the formation of multiple family units and careers that continue to this day.
